Susan G. Komen for the Cure


The Susan G. Komen for the Cure was founded on the power of a promise made between two sisters - Susan "Suzy" G. Komen and Nancy Brinker.

Suzy was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1978, when little was known about the disease and it was rarely discussed in public. Before she died at the age of 36, after a three-year battle, Suzy asked her sister to do everything possible to bring an end to breast cancer. Nancy kept her promise by establishing the Susan G. Komen for the Cure in Suzy's memory in 1982.

The Lowcountry Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure is one of hundreds of local chapters around the country working diligently to further the Foundation's mission to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures.


Women who live in the Lowcountry that are in need of a mammogram and who are uninsured or need help can call our local affiliate office at 843-556-8011. We are available to provide information on local breast health resources available throughout the Lowcountry.

STATEMENT FROM THE LOWCOUNTRY AFFILIATE

The Lowcountry Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure does not and has never provided funds to Planned Parenthood for breast health services. No Komen Affiliate in South Carolina does. The information being distributed that Komen National funds Planned Parenthood at any level is false. All local donations sent to National are used for ground-breaking research. Additionally, the National Cancer Institute and other large notable institutions state there is no conclusive evidence linking breast cancer and abortion.
