VIM - Volunteers in Medicine Clinic
Beaufort, Jasper and Hampton Counties
Awarded: $57,900


Proposed Project:

  • Screen 392 patients, with 75 unilateral spot compressions at $82.00 and 45 bilateral spot compressions at $99.99, and 10 stereotactic biopsies at $1,446.
  • Educational materials, transportation and funding a Support group.
  • Provides the uninsured working poor in southern Beaufort Country with routine GYN care, PAP smears and screening mammograms.
  • If mammograms indicate additional treatment is needed, VIM provides care and follow up for the entire treatment period at no charge to the patient.



Smith Medical
Georgetown County
Awarded: $24,621


Proposed Project:

  • 100% diagnostics
  • Ensure patients are referred for screening mammograms appropriately
  • Recruit healthcare providers willing to provide care at or below the Medicaid reimbursement rate
  • Implement systems that ensure all referred patients are tracked through treatment completion



Hollings Cancer Center - MUSC
Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester and Georgetown Counties
Awarded: $50,500


Proposed Project:

  • 94% screening and 6% treatment
  • 493 digital mammography screenings on the Hollings Cancer Center (HCC) Mobile Health Unit and in the HCC multi-disciplinary breast clinic
  • Ensure that all women with abnormal findings receive access to follow up care



Beaufort Jasper Hampton Comprehensive Health Services Inc.
Beaufort, Jasper and Hampton Counties
Awarded: $65,656


Proposed Project:

  • Outreach program for breast cancer awareness to reach 10,000 women
  • 350 in-kind clinical breast exams
  • Follow-up care will be available for up to $20,000 with maximum payment per patient set at $2,000 per woman.
  • Provide six outreach women health programs providing clinical breast exams and mammograms in collaboration with the Beaufort Memorial Mobile Wellness Unit.
  • Conduct a Women's Empowerment Conference in Beaufort, SC.



Roper St. Francis Healthcare - Roper St. Francis Foundation
Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester Counties
Awarded: $34,970


Proposed Project:

  • $19,054 screening, $13,191 diagnostics and education materials
  • To allow Roper St. Francis to expand existing breast health services for economically disadvantaged and at-risk women.
  • Breast imaging services will be increased by 36% over the previous year.
  • Provides assistance for a peer-to-peer survivor mentoring programs that will deepen the level of support available to breast cancer patients.



Allendale County Hospital
Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell and Hampton Counties
Awarded: $60,145


Proposed Project:

  • Provides breast health services for uninsured or underinsured women ages 21-64 who do not qualify for the Best Chance Network.
  • Services include: screenings, diagnostic mammograms, breast ultrasounds, physician office visits for clinical breast exams, biopsies and educational materials.



The Regional Medical Center
Bamberg, Calhoun and Orangeburg Counties
Awarded: $69,899


Proposed Project:

  • 323 screening mammograms as well as diagnostic services, if needed, for women between ages 30-46.
  • Educating women through Lunch and Learn programs.



South Carolina Cancer Alliance
Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Beaufort, Charleston, Colleton, Hampton, Jasper and Orangeburg Counties
Awarded: $20,000


Proposed Project:

  • 100% education
  • Implementing the Witness Project to address the burden of breast cancer impacting the African American population.
  • Trains African American women to become Lay Health Advisors in order to education their community about risks and screenings.
  • Will reach about 2,000 people with educational message.



Dream Center Clinic
Berkeley and Charleston Counties
Awarded: $27,425


Proposed Project:

  • $12,825.65 requested for a Spanish Interpreter in conjunction with MUSC Mammogram van.
  • $14,600 requested for transportation including $8,000 to secure the purchase of a van.
  • Meets the initial examination needs of medically uninsured and underinsured women.



Greater St. Paul AME Church
Georgetown County
Awarded: $18,500


Proposed Project:

  • 100% education
  • Funds salaries, supplies and travel



United Way Bamberg, Colleton and Hampton
Bamberg, Colleton and Hampton Counties
Awarded: $36,365


Proposed Project:

  • Provide mammography screenings/diagnostics at Colleton Medical Center.
  • Raise awareness about the importance of early detections and treatment.
  • Collaborate with community partners.
  • Ensure local health care facilities/providers provide access to patients on breast cancer screening and self-exams.

Proposed Project:

  • Plans to provide assistance to approximately 70 breast cancer patients at an average cost of $500 per patient request.
  • Funds will be used to provide patients with the care and treatment they need without the financial burden.
