Funding Priorities

25 percent of the net income from each domestic Affiliate Race supports the national Komen for the Cure Grant Program, which funds groundbreaking breast cancer research, meritorious awards and educational and scientific conferences around the world.

75 percent of the net income from each Lowcountry Affiliate Race for the Cure and other fundraising events stays in the local community to fund breast health education, breast cancer screening and treatment projects.

Brief Summary of Priorities

The following funding priorities are based on the findings of the 2011 Community Profile.

  • Reduce the barriers to screening and treatment
         Target populations include: African American and Hispanic
         Barriers include: literacy, transportation, financial, racial bias and cultural beliefs
  • Increase education about breast health, breast cancer screenings and available resources
         Target populations include medial providers as well as the general public
         Healthy lifestyles are considered part of breast health education
  • Improve support services for survivors
         Target population is all breast cancer survivors including but not limited to: men, young women and metastatic patients
