Health Alerts : Are Breast Pads for Self Exams Useful?

Dr. Eric Winer, Chief Scientific Advisor and Susan Brown, Director of Health Education at Komen for the Cure, were quoted in The Wall Street Journal for an article about whether or not a breast pad can make breast exams easier. A U.S. distributor recently began test-marketing the device. "If this product helps a woman to be more aware of her breasts, then it may be useful," says Eric Winer. "But it would not appear to be an item that women should feel compelled to purchase." The monthly breast exam itself is falling out of favor, since there is no proof it increases survival rates, physicians say. "Even though monthly exams are no longer considered essential, women should note changes in their breasts," says Susan Brown. She adds, "It's important to look for visual changes such as dimpling around the nipple, itchy scaly rashes or any change in size or shape of the breast."
