PAST EVENTS

2010 Survivors Celebration

On March 7, nearly 350 survivors and their guests enjoyed an afternoon tea at the 16th Annual Survivors Celebration in the Embassy Suites' ballroom. The stage was set for a tea party, adorned with windows and dragonflies, and the music of Kathleen Wilson's harp filled the air. In addition to delicious teas provided by The Republic of Tea, guests were treated to an array of tea sandwiches and pastries. Dreamland Images' photo booth was a huge success, with laughter emanating from it throughout the afternoon.

Pink Sunday 2009

Pink Sunday 2009 was a tremendous success for the Lowcountry Affiliate. Over 140 churches participated in our first annual Pink Sunday, reaching almost 30,000 women and men with life-saving information about breast cancer and free screening programs in our service area. Some churches had congregations as small as 10, and others had congregations over 1000.

Congratulations to Oak Grove Baptist Church of Orangeburg for registering the most women for the Commitment Challenge. Eighty-two women from the church made the promise to get their annual mammograms. Our Komen Care package was won by Jackie Johnson of Oakman Branch Baptist Church in Walterboro.

"Momograms" delivered for Mother's Day

Local Quartet Delivers Momogram

On Saturday May 9th, Southern Transfer Quartet delivered a "momogram" to Diane Riley (pictured on left with single rose). She is currently fighting breast cancer. The "gram" was paid for by her neighbor, pictured on the right, who is also battling cancer in her jaw and neck area. Other neighbors were also in attendance in (Belle Hall) and the quartet had an opportunity to sing a tag with two of the gentlemen there.

Seabrookers Raise Money to Fight Breast Cancer

Swing for the Cure 2009

Seabrook Island Club hosted its 12th annual Swing for the Cure© to benefit the Lowcountry Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® on March 30th. After a fun morning of tennis or golf, the women enjoyed a “Tour of Italy” buffet at the Club and a raffle. Many of the raffle items were donated by island residents, local businesses, and the club’s golf and tennis professionals. This year, over $13,000 was raised by the participants, sponsors, and donors.

"Together, We Can" - March 14, 2009

Drumming Circle

"Together, We Can", a workshop for survivors and their families was presented on March 14, by the Lowcountry Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. The event was a great success with families from around the tri-county area spending the day learning and sharing at the beautiful Middleton Inn.

Morning sessions provided participants with the opportunity to meet the clinicians. Children had the opportunity to meet and share with others who are going through difficult times because they have a parent with breast cancer.

Smiling Child

Afternoon sessions were a time for self-expression. Some chose to take a quiet walk around the grounds, while others created personal collages of their journeys through breast cancer. The afternoon concluded with a rousing drum circle for all, facilitated by Chip Burr of Inner Rhythms.

Drumming Hands

When asked if they would recommend the program to others, every participant gave a resounding "Yes!"
